Nig@thon 2014 @ GGC

ABOUT Nig@thon
Nig@thon is a special android application development event for female undergraduate students of Nigeria tertiary institutions (Universities, polytechnics, colleges of education) and senior secondary schools.
The event which is being organized by a volunteer committee of members of Intelligent Systems Group University of Ibadan (ISG)  and Global centre for Information Technology Empowerment and Education (iTEE), is led by Dr. Yetunde Folajimi, a Computer Science expert at University of Ibadan. The event is completely free courtesy of seed fund from Institute of International Education (IIE) Women Enhancing Technology (WeTech).  WeTech is a 2013 Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action that was launched by USA former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.
Free snacks, lunch, souvenirs and training kits are provided courtesy of donations from our sponsors.


PRIZES & AWARDS
  • Best project award (Undergraduate): N30,000, android tablet and 16gb flash disk
  • 1st runner-up (Undergraduate): N15,000, android smartphone & 16gb flash disk
  • 2nd runner-up (Undergraduate): N7,500 &  16gb flash disks
  • Most talented geek girl (sec. sch. category) - Laptop
  • Consolation prizes: Lots of memory cards and flash disks
SPECIAL  ATTRACTION
Principals of secondary schools are invited to nominate a female student from each school to participate at the geek girls codefest (coding competition) of the event. The most talented geek girl goes home with a laptop and a plaque for her school. Consolation prizes also goes to 1st and 2nd runners up.

ELIGIBILITY:
You don't have to be a programmer or computer science student. All you need is a spirit of innovation and readiness to learn. Trainers will be available to put you through rapid android application development without knowing how to write a single piece of code.

HIGHLIGTS:
  • Brainstorming to create insight into using apps to solve prevailing challenges in Nigeria
  • hands-on training sessions on android app development. 
  • Participants work in teams to develop innovative android apps.

  • Participants learn on their own and using the resources in their training kits
  • Team members may meet off-site to hack their ideas into action

  • Hacking begins: Participants create working android apps all day 9.30-am-5.00pm*

Saturday  10th January 2015
  • Hacking continues: Participants finetune their projects  ( 8.00-am-11.30pm)
  • Project showcase begins (Individuals and teams demonstrate their projects)    (11.30pm)
  • Stakeholders and panelists inspect and evaluate projects   (11.30 – 12.30pm)
  • Tea break, interlude, network & chit-chat  (12.30 – 1.00)
  • Final demos and oral presentation by top 15 developers     (1.00 – 2.00pm)
  • Lunch break  (2.00 – 2.30pm)
  • Final results and presentation of award   (2.30 – 3.00pm)
  • Closing remarks, more chit-chat and photographs   (3.00 – 3.30pm)
